During its early history, Cranford was merely the location of the Minisink Train as well as grist and saw mills along the Raritan River - it also became a site for boating and river carnivals and became known as the "Venice of New Jersey." During this time, it was a popular summer resort for the wealthy of New York City who built their grand homes along the river.

 

Commuting From Cranford

 

 

Many Cranford residents are commuters who work in Manhattan and need transportation on a daily basis to New York City. Cranford offers daily public transportation both by train and bus. The town is based in the New Jersey Transit Raritan Valley network and provides frequent service direct to Newark Penn Station where you can find a connecting train to NYC Penn Station. The total commute takes about 45 minutes. New Jersey Transit also offers an express bus service, number 113, which is about a 45 minute ride to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

Cranford is also an easy drive to Newark Liberty International Airport. It's about 10 miles away by car and the drive takes about 20 minutes.

 

Education and Schooling

 

The Cranford Public School District consistently ranks among the highest in statewide education polls. In 2017 reports by school-rated Niche.com, it was not only found to be among the best districts in the state, but also among the safest. Schools within the district consist of Bloomingdale Avenue, Brookside Place, Walnut Avenue and Livingston Avenue elementary schools, Hillside Avenue and Orange Avenue middle schools and Cranford High School.

If you're looking for a restaurant, you won't go hungry. The town is home to an assortment of restaurants and eateries which span many food types and price ranges. Always popular are such restaurants as Garlic Rose Bistro, 100 Steps Kitchen & Raw Bar, Romolas Seafood & Grille, Cranford Hotel Restaurant & Pub, and Riverside Inn Bar

If you're interested in eating Middle Eastern Food, Cranford has a small area where they flourish. Take a stroll down North and South Union Street in the center of town and you will find Old City Cafe & Grill, serving Mediterranean and Lebanese food, Oasis Restaurant serving Moroccan and Mediterranean food, Ambeli Greek Taverna and Syrian Dish. There are plenty of pizza places but these are based on personal taste. If you're looking for a good bakery for bread, it's hard to beat Breadsmith in the center of the shopping district.

 

Events And Entertainment

 

Following a strong theme of community values, and a good dash of just having fun, Cranford offers town-wide events for every age group and interest. Just keeping up with the Fall Festival in October, complete with the Rubber Ducky Race, the Annual Scarecrow Stroll, trolley rides with Santa, and Cranford Paint-Out will keep you busy. If you're looking for more events, attend the Porch Fest, Cruiser Nights and Movies Under the Stars. Meet your neighbors and enjoy the town with all these wonderful events.

 

Get Outside in Cranford

 

 

The Township is rightly proud of its recreational facilities. These include outdoor pools, an indoor pool and fitness complex at the Centennial Avenue Recreational Center, a bike path, a canoe club, tennis courts and sports fields and parks. Also in town are the Cranford Clay Courts Tennis Club near the Rahway River where you can enjoy paddling, fishing, picnicking, or simply soaking in the sunshine and beautiful scenery.
